If you liked Diablo and Diablo II then Torchlight will be right up your alley. The developer of the game is comprised of ex Blizzard North employees (creators of the Diablo series) and Travis Baldree, the creator of the game” Fate”.
Torchlight seems to be a blend of Diablo and Fate and from what I’ve played it’s a very good fusion. The only downside to this game at the moment is the lack of multiplayer. I read an interview from the developer and their long term plan is to turn it into an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) game.
All of the fun from the original Diablo series is there and a lot of the annoyances have been dealt with. Here are some highlights:
- At character creation you choose a cat or dog as a pet. As you play you find fishing holes and catch various types of fish. Feeding the fish to your pet transforms them into a new form temporarily, giving it new powers.
- Your pet has it’s own inventory screen as large as the characters. You can fill up your pet’s inventory and send it on a trip to town to sell all your loot. No more going back to town to sell all your loot. I only wish the inventory size was a little bit bigger.
- Unlike Diablo, each loot item takes only one inventory space.
- You can quit the game at any time and it will auto-save your position including your town portal position. No more running to find that next way point so you can call it a day.
- There are three classes – Destroyer, a melee fighter type, male; Vanquisher, ranged combat, female; Alchemist, magic user, male. Each class has three skill trees to choose from as you level.
All in all it’s a pretty fun game, I give it 2 thumbs up.
